The Spanish Style

When the Panama Canal opened in 1951, a spectacular exposition in San Diego intoduced the United States to a flamboyant Spanish baroque ornamentation known as Churrigueresque.

The name comes from Churriguera, a 17^th centuary family of Spanish architects and sculptors.In Spain and Mexico, Churrigueresque were elaboratery ornamented with towers, spires and open carving shapes.

A modest home can have Churrigueresque flourishes.Look for wooden doors,mantales or banister carved with elaborate swirls or highly intricate fountains and sculputures in the garden.

Spanish style homes imitate traditional homes found in Spain.Some of the features that are found in a Spanish home are stucco exterior siiding and low-pitched barrel tiled roofs.This particular design also includes arched windows and raised entryways and a courtyard.
